Redrow sponsors Devonport Market Hall’s first open day

The Devonport Market Hall redevelopment team will be giving a first glimpse of what’s in store for the building, which is due to open in August 2016, at the Digital Futures open day on Saturday 20 June.

Sponsored by housing developer Redrow, which funded the £500,000 restoration of the Market Hall and clock tower, the open day will run from 10am – 4pm and is free and open to all.

Taking place at Devonport Guildhall, there will be digital fun for friends, families and businesses alike, packed full of tech workshops, interactive installations and digital demonstrations.

Visitors will be able to try their hand at computer coding, play the latest games, build interactive models, experience Oculus Rift technology and immersive 360 projections, and may even see some drones.

There will be an opportunity to meet the team and partners behind the Market Hall development and see the latest plans for what will be the hub of digital activity in Plymouth.

Richard Williams, commercial director at Redrow (West Country) commented: “The Devonport Market Hall is an important landmark in the city and we’re delighted to sponsor this open day which showcases for the first time the new high-tech offer this formerly derelict building will soon be providing for Plymouth.

“We’ve been involved in the restoration of the Market Hall and Clock Tower for a number of years now and it’s absolutely brilliant to see the transformation of this historic building and to be part of the team breathing new life into part of the city’s heritage.”

The refurbishment of Devonport Market Hall is being led by social enterprise RIO (the Real Ideas Organisation) in partnership with Plymouth City Council, the Institute of Digital Arts and Technology (i-DAT at Plymouth University), City College Plymouth, Devonport High School for Boys and seven of the brightest tech companies in the region.

The building, built in 1852 but left derelict for many years, will become a digital centre for arts, community activity and enterprise. In addition to providing office, lab and teaching space for the partners, the Market Hall will also offer space for events and meetings, a range of education programmes and a digital arts visitor centre.

Ed Whitelaw, Head of Regeneration and Enterprise for RIO said “The Digital Futures open day will be a chance for people to see our vision for Devonport Market Hall and showcase the expertise we have here in Plymouth for digital technologies. We’re delighted to have Redrow on board as sponsor of the event as they are playing an instrumental role in transforming the Devonport neighbourhood into a fantastic place to live, work and enjoy.”

The Digital Futures open day will be held at Devonport Guildhall from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 20 June and is free to attend.
