On 15th November, Digital Day is back for its 4th year, raising awareness of digital career opportunities. British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) have worked with thousands of students so far and are ready for another year!
Digital Day is aimed at students aged 13-18 years and is free to take part in. There are workshops held in creating new digital ideas and concepts in response to different challenges submitted by the sponsors. Each school will submit their top entry to be judged by a panel of industry experts and sponsors including Tata Communications and Standard Life.
The nationwide competition and initiative brings schools and the digital industry together to battle the UK’s digital skills gap. According to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES),
“the digital and creative sector is expected to need 1.2 million new workers between 2012 and 2022 to support growth and replace workers that leave the sector. There is a particular concern about the quantity of graduates needed by the digital sub-sector, which is expected to need more than half a million new highly skilled workers between 2012 and 2022.”
Last year’s Digital Day saw a team from Bournemouth School for Girls win Standard Life’s challenge for their money saving app concept ‘Squirrel’. Their prize was a tour to Channel 4 News where they even met the legend himself, Jon Snow.
