Internationally renowned designers Hemingway Design, co-founded by Wayne Hemingway MBE, has been appointed by RIO – the Real Ideas Organisation – to join the design team working on the Market Hall development in Devonport, Plymouth.
With an impressive back catalogue of innovative and thoughtful design solutions, particularly for regeneration and the built environment, Hemingway Design will lead on interior design for the Market Hall renovation.
The Market Hall is a £7.2 million project, led by RIO, in partnership with Plymouth City Council, University of Plymouth, City College Plymouth and Devonport High School for Boys. Once completed the Market Hall will offer a new space for digital incubation, work, and experimentation, focussing on tech businesses, research, art, education, and entertainment. A new extension to the Grade II Listed Market Hall will house a 15m immersive dome, offering a state of the art shared virtual reality environment.
Lindsey Hall, Chief Executive of RIO said “We are developing the Market Hall as a world-class space for digital; the addition of Hemingway Design to our team will ensure the building’s interior reflects its history, whilst also creating an exciting space for digital businesses to create the future.
“Wayne and his team have worked on some world-class regeneration projects. We are really excited to have them with us for this development and look forward to working with them to create a stunning experience for anyone visiting, learning, inventing and creating in the Market Hall.”
Wayne Hemingway, Hemingway Design said: “We love the building, love the location, love RIO’s intended forward facing use for this lovely old piece of industrial heritage and we love RIO and the social values that they stand for. We are glad to be on board.”
With planning permission granted in 2017 and Kier recently announced as construction partner, RIO hopes to start on site in the next few months and, construction programme permitting hopes to open the Market Hall in the summer of 2019.
